Chapter Twenty

“What do we do now?”

Lucifer looked across the table to see Stefan pushing his plate aside. The meal was incredible – Carlos remembering all of Stefan’s favorite foods. Creed had stayed in the kitchen while they were eating, likely catching Carlos up on what had been going on, and enjoying some of Carlos’s cooking for himself. Stefan had definitely enjoyed his brunch. Lucifer knew that because he could feel all that Stefan could feel. Rather than find it intrusive, Lucifer found he liked it. Less chance of me fucking up if I know what my mate is feeling at any given moment.

“What would you like to do now?” he countered. “I seem to recall you saying something about me missing some basic points about this damn hex case, and I totally own that. I do tend to rush headlong in one direction, fixated on an end point without considering there might be an easier or more productive way of doing things.” Pushing his own plate aside, he reached across the table taking Stefan’s hand. “Talk to me, my wonderful mate. What’s your take on the situation so far, and where do you think we should go from here?”

Stefan thought for a moment. “Creed seems to think the box we collected from Helen’s was the source magic for the hex that infected Foster and brought down your plane. If you remember when Foster described meeting Helen, he said she grabbed hold of his arm, and that it was as if her magic was trying to burrow into him.”

“Yes,” Lucifer nodded. He did remember. “I thought that sounded weird at the time.”

“Can we assume then, that Foster got infected with the hex when Helen first got the box, and her new job, all courtesy of the Brethren. She ended up tied to the box, which made her compliant enough for Brethren purposes, and because the box had a link with her, it could and did burrow into Foster when they first met.”

“Which is what the box tried to do with you.” Lucifer shook his head. “Thank the Fates for the marks on your sexy butt, or I would be dusting off my black suit.”

“It’s interesting, how Foster said she grabbed his bicep, his upper arm, and not his forearm…” Stefan looked at Lucifer expectantly.

“Of course, because most magic users wear their marks on their forearms, like mine.”

“So Helen transferred the hex to Foster by grabbing his upper arm. He transferred it to you by shaking your hand, no marks there either. He went loopy when we tried to remove the hex from him, as did Helen when we took the box. If she hadn’t been so disgusted at the idea of wearing handcuffs, we might never have gotten them separated.”

“The hex, then third hand, didn’t impact me as badly as it did Foster, but it did have a negative effect.” It wasn’t something Lucifer was going to forget in a hurry. “Fortunately, you were able to cleanse me of it. As
